Would you start a brick and mortar business without listing it in the Yellow Pages?
That's not a good business plan. When starting a business on the internet just like a brick and mortar, you need to have as much exposure as possible. On the internet there aren't any yellow pages to list your business. Well that's not true but they're use is still to find local info. They're for a different medium than the internet. Yellow pages are for internet advertising. In a large company setting you could use them to locate departments and individuals using a local intranet directory. But on the internet it's not practical nor is it necessary to pay to have you website listed in any local directories. On the internet we use search engine directories to look up information, not business names. If you don't know the internet address for a business name you can use these search directories to try to find it but it won't be easy. These search engine directories were designed to find information not business names. So when you are looking to design a website you need to keep this in mind. Information rules, the more information your website has the easier it is for search engines to list you. And list you many, many times. Comparing it to the paper yellow pages, once your business is listed in a directory it would be listed in the business section and under hardware in the yellow section. Even a couple of listing like these would cost you quite a bit. With search engines your hardware business could be listed under toilets, paint, home improvement, and dozens more. And it's free! Yes free, it doesn't cost you any more to be listed in dozens of search results than it does one. So what is the catch you say? Well you need to make your website search engine friendly. Or as we professionals call it search engine optimized (SEO).
When to optimize your website?
When optimizing a website it should be done from the ground up. It shouldn't be an after thought. But you live and learn. If you have a website now but don't get the traffic you would like it's because optimizing your site for search engine was not the concern of your website designer. Website designers make pretty websites that know one see's, unless you tell your friend to go check out your new toy you paid too much for. I'm not saying websites have to be ugly or anything just that if we wrote the declaration of independence on the wall of a cave in northern Minnesota and told a few friends about it our flag would look a lot different today. So the point is to write your website pages in a way that search engines can efficiently and thoroughly list them in many different search results.
